Relief Registered Nurse – Consumption Treatment Services (CTS)
We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs, parenting education and family advocacy.
Job Summary
The Consumption Treatment Service (CTS) Nurse assists in the provision of direct patient care, and community services in order to improve the health of the Regent Park Community.
The CTS Nurse works collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary CTS staff team that strives for excellence in client-centered care and education. Using a client-centered, anti-oppression and harm reduction approach, the CTS Nurse will supervise participants administering their own pre-obtained illicit drug injections, provide safer injection education/support monitor service users for adverse reactions, assess, respond to and manage overdose events, and more.
This is a Relief Position.
Staff will have the opportunity to participate in HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan).
This is a bargaining unit position with OPSEU Local 5115.

Responsibilities Include
- Greets and engages clients, assesses eligibility for CTS, initiates intake into the service and orients them to the service, space, and CTS client agreements.
- Supports a welcoming, non-judgmental relaxed space for clients.
- Works independently, under the guidance of medical directives or under direction from or in consultation with other RPCHC primary care providers, or in consultation with other relevant inter-professional team members as appropriate.
- Completes intake and assessments when required, and acts as an entry point into CTS and other health or social services at RPCHC.
- Takes notes regarding the medical/health background, psycho-social, economic, functional and family status of individuals who wish to access CTS, and may require more intensive assessment and support.
- Assess client knowledge of the consumption process, and works to achieve the best possible health outcomes for each client.
- Conducts physical examination and nursing assessments, including basic wound care related to consumption drug use, basic primary care, routine diagnostic tests, and referrals.
- Consultation with other team members as required, to establish a diagnosis and plan of care.
- Supervise CTS clients to administer their own consumptions.
- Provide education and supportive counselling through a harm reduction trauma informed approach regarding safer consumption techniques, and in such matters as sexual health.
- Assesses, responds and manages overdoses events. Provides overdose prevention education.
- Initiates emergency response if necessary, as per established protocols.
- Works with other CTS staff to maintain the flow of clients in and out of each CTS client area.
- Provides health related equipment or supplies to clients, including harm reduction supplies, and advises on proper use.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Current certification as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario is required.
- Minimum of 2 years’ nursing experience in a community setting or combination of community and hospital, or public health settings, is required.
- Experience working with people who use drugs is required.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of harm reduction principles and practices, substance use and overdose response is required.
- Experience in primary care within a street/outreach nursing setting is an asset.
- Experience working with racialized populations, Indigenous people, women who engage in sex work, prisoners/ex-prisoners, people with mental health challenges, and people who have experienced trauma, is an asset.
- Understands anti-oppression principles, and able to work effectively with people of various cultural, age and economic backgrounds.
- Able to work collaboratively within and across teams.
- Knowledge of the Regent Park area and issues affecting the community, including services and resources available for clients.
- Must be available to work extended hours (before 9am, after 6pm, weekends) as required.
- Must have up to date COVID vaccination for the protection of clients and staff.
