We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs, parenting education and family advocacy.

Job Summary

The Ground Floor Receptionist provides friendly and professional client intake and ensures efficient operation of the Reception area. The receptionist welcomes visitors and as first point of contact helps to promote a positive image of the Health Centre and services.

Hours of work include both regular and extended evening hours of operation each week.

This is a Full-time Permanent position. This is a bargaining unit position with OPSEU local 5115.

$20.00 to $24.08 per hour

Responsibilities Include

  • Perform reception, clerical and administrative support duties
  • Greeting clients/patients and providing support as necessary, using tact and diplomacy
  • Answering incoming telephone calls in a friendly and efficient manner, processing messages taken by the answering service during non-office hours according to protocols
  • Processing information by sorting and distributing incoming mail/parcels, preparing mail/parcels going out
  • Typing correspondence and photocopying as required
  • Schedules client / patient appointments following set procedures, using Electronic Health Record system
  • Calls patients to remind them of upcoming appointments as required
  • Maintains knowledge of community resources and makes referrals, as appropriate
  • De-escalates conflict with or among clients in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Initiates crisis response procedures when necessary, requesting assistance from appropriate professional staff in case of emergency situations
  • Occasionally distribute harm reduction supplies including naloxone and educate clients about how to use naloxone as needed
  • Initiating answering service at the end of the day and provides back up to lock up procedures when building closes, as required

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Completion of relevant certificate or diploma and two years’ related experience in a community setting
  • Able to work effectively with a diverse client population including people with mental health and/or addictions issues
  • Crisis de-escalation training and or experience
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Privacy Act
  • Excellent telephone manner and communication skills
  • Proficient with computer software including MS Office, Internet, email, and Electronic Health Records (Nightingale On Demand an asset)
  • Understanding of Anti-oppression principles
  • Knowledge of the Regent Park area and issues affecting the community
  • Availability for evening work
  • Must have up to date COVID vaccine for the protection of clients and staff
